Four people have died trying to cross the Channel in small boats overnight, French officials confirmed today, 30 July 2026. These deaths occurred in two separate incidents off the French coast.
In the first incident, a man died after a vessel capsized off Hardelot, France's northern coast, late on Wednesday. Six other individuals, including a one-year-old child, sustained minor injuries. Local officials described the vessel as a "taxi" boat.
Separately, three people were discovered dead aboard a small boat early on Thursday. The boat had launched from the Dunkirk area overnight and was spotted near a breakwater. Emergency medical personnel confirmed their deaths.
A UK government spokesperson stated that "Every death in the Channel is a tragedy and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit." The University of Oxford's Migration Observatory reports that 162 people died in the English Channel between 2018 and 2025.
Small-boat crossings have been the most common method for people detected entering the UK illegally since 2020. Home Office figures indicate over 13,000 arrivals have been recorded so far this year, a 45% decrease compared to this time last year.
