UK Sport has withdrawn all funding from GB Snowsport for the upcoming Olympic cycle, following its decision to commission an independent review into the organisation's governance. This announcement comes just six months after Team GB achieved its most successful Winter Olympics at Milano-Cortina.
Despite the funding withdrawal from GB Snowsport, UK Sport has confirmed a record £33m in funding for British winter sport and parasport athletes ahead of the Alpes 2030 Games. This includes £12.5m guaranteed for coaches and athletes in ski and snowboard events, and their Paralympic equivalents, over the next four years.
UK Sport stated that it will not route investment for snowsport through GB Snowsport once the funding for the Milan Cortina cycle concludes. The funding body has directly informed all funded snowsport athletes of this decision, assuring them of continued grant payments into the new cycle while challenges are addressed. A new funding mechanism outside of GB Snowsport is expected to be announced before the end of the year.
GB Snowsport, which has seen two chairs in the past three years, expressed disappointment with the funding decision. The organisation stated it had already completed an independent governance review, funded by UK Sport, which it claims confirmed strong and appropriate governance standards.
Separately, UK Sport confirmed the creation of Sport Org, a specialist, multisport performance delivery organisation. Sport Org will take over the running of elite programmes in certain sports, including curling and wheelchair curling, and will also manage British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association programmes before Utah 2034.
