Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Milan today, Tuesday 4 August 2026, for the funeral of legendary defender Franco Baresi. The 66-year-old died last week following a period of ill health.
Baresi, regarded as one of the game's greatest defenders, captained AC Milan for 15 seasons, making 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals. He secured 18 trophies with the Rossoneri, including six Serie A titles and three Champions Leagues.
He was capped 81 times by Italy and was part of the 1982 World Cup-winning squad. Baresi also captained Italy in the 1994 World Cup final, which they lost to Brazil.
The funeral service took place at Sant'Ambrogio Basilica, with club greats such as Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, and Roberto Baggio in attendance. Current AC Milan players not on the pre-season tour, including USA forward Christian Pulisic, also attended.
AC Milan will honour their former captain before their friendly match against Inter on Wednesday.
