The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on Sunday night with a closing ceremony featuring rock band Simple Minds. Commonwealth Games chiefs declared the movement "Alive and Kicking" following the 11-day event.
Glasgow stepped in to host the Games with a £160 million programme after Victoria, Australia, withdrew. Glasgow 2026 chief executive Phil Batty stated that the city's offering, bolstered by £100 million in compensation from Australia, can serve as a blueprint for a more flexible model for future Games.
Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir indicated a target of roughly a 60% reduction in future hosting costs, aiming for around £300 million per Games. Sadleir also mentioned that five nations are discussing hosting the 2034 Games, a significant increase in interest. She has not ruled out making some sports, such as athletics, qualification events for continental or world championships to attract star names.
Australia led the medal table with 171 medals, including 70 golds, despite a significantly reduced programme compared to Birmingham 2022.
