A series of special events, releases, collaborative projects, and fan experiences have launched globally to mark what would have been David Bowie’s 80th birthday. Bowie, who died in 2016, would have reached this milestone on 8 January 2027.
Organisers of the Bowie80 events state that they will acknowledge Bowie’s lasting impact across various art forms and in both mainstream and outsider culture. These events, which began on Monday and are set to continue throughout next year, will be announced via the bowie80.davidbowie.com website.
Initial initiatives include an exclusive partnership with US department store Nordstrom, offering limited-edition collections from designers such as Undercover and Marc Jacobs. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is planning a Bowie80 celebration with a pop-up store and events on Bowie’s birthday weekend. Additionally, the Morrison Hotel Gallery will host Strange Fascination, a major photography exhibition opening in February in New York City and West Hollywood.
In the UK, exhibitions already announced include David Bowie: You’re Not Alone, currently at London’s Lightroom and moving to Manchester and Brighton next year. David Bowie: On Tour will feature 100 items from the V&A archive, starting at the V&A Dundee from November to February before moving to Blackpool.
