God Of War: Laufey Set For February 2027 Release, Kratos Sequel Confirmed

Santa Monica Studios has announced that the new God Of War spin-off, Laufey, will launch on February 16, 2027, for PlayStation 5. The game will explore Kratos' wife's journey in the afterlife, with a Kratos-centric sequel to follow.

  • God Of War: Laufey is scheduled for release on February 16, 2027.
  • The game features Kratos' wife, Laufey (Faye), navigating the afterlife.
  • A direct sequel starring Kratos, following both Laufey and 2022's Ragnarok, has been confirmed.
  • Laufey will be among the last first-party physical PlayStation discs before a January 2028 deadline.

Fans of the acclaimed God Of War series can mark their calendars for February 16, 2027, as Santa Monica Studios has officially announced the release date for the highly anticipated spin-off, God Of War: Laufey. The news, revealed during a special panel at Comic Con San Diego, confirms the game will be available exclusively for PlayStation 5.

God Of War: Laufey delves into the story of Kratos' wife, Faye, also known as Laufey, following her death at the beginning of the 2018 God Of War reboot. Players will guide Faye through the 'Everywhen,' a dangerous afterlife inhabited by gods from various mythologies. Her mission is to protect Kratos and their son Atreus, whose safety is jeopardised by the unfolding events in this new realm. The game's official description hints at Faye's unexpected awakening and the necessity of fighting through the afterlife to safeguard her loved ones.

Adding to the excitement, Cory Barlog, the director behind the God Of War franchise, also confirmed that a new Kratos-starring sequel will follow both Laufey and the critically acclaimed God Of War: Ragnarok from 2022. While specific details about this future project remain under wraps, Barlog emphasised that Kratos will always be a central figure in the broader narrative tapestry the studio aims to explore.

The announcement also comes with a notable implication for physical media collectors: God Of War: Laufey is expected to be one of the final first-party PlayStation titles released on physical discs. Santa Monica Studios previously indicated that physical PlayStation discs for first-party titles would cease before January 2028, making Laufey a significant release in this transition.

The game has already generated discussion, particularly regarding Kratos' absence from the lead role in Laufey. Deborah Ann Woll, the actress portraying Laufey, recently addressed some fan reactions, stating she remains unbothered by the criticism and confident in the game's quality. In related news, the planned God Of War adaptation has faced a setback, with reports of Kratos actor Ryan Hurst sustaining an on-set injury, necessitating a recast for the role.

Why this matters: This release is a major event for UK gamers and PlayStation enthusiasts, offering a new perspective within a beloved franchise. It also highlights a significant shift in the gaming industry towards digital-only distribution for first-party titles.

What this means for you: UK gamers will be able to purchase God Of War: Laufey on PlayStation 5, either as a physical disc or digital download, from February 2027. This could also be one of the last opportunities for British consumers to buy a new first-party PlayStation game on physical media.
