Google Maps has today, 8 October 2026, launched a new feature displaying near real-time petrol and diesel prices across the UK. This integration aims to help millions of drivers find the cheapest fuel in their local area.
The government states that comparing prices could save households with a car an average of £40 a year. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address the affordability crisis, which has seen fuel prices increase due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The data for Google Maps comes from the Fuel Finder scheme, which mandates petrol stations to report price changes within 30 minutes or face a fine. This scheme, recommended by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), now reflects approximately 99% of all fuel sold on UK roads. The data is already used by other apps such as Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com, and RAC Fuel Watch.
