Government and businesses announce new youth job and training opportunities

New Industrial Strategy Jobs Plans aim to create thousands of annual opportunities for young people in professional services and construction, with further plans for Digital and Defence sectors expected this week.

  • 22,400 new under-25 apprenticeships annually in professional and business services are planned.
  • 40,000 construction placements are expected each year.
  • The Defence Jobs Plan aims to increase defence sector apprenticeships to at least 14,000 annually by 2035.

New Industrial Strategy Jobs Plans, published today, aim to provide thousands of additional opportunities for young people to enter skilled careers. The plans, developed by government and businesses, focus on expanding apprenticeships, work experience, and training.

The Professional and Business Services Jobs Plan anticipates 22,400 new under-25 apprenticeships each year in fields such as accountancy, legal services, and consulting. Concurrently, the Construction Jobs Plan includes 40,000 annual placements, contributing to a previously announced industry goal of 100,000 yearly job opportunities.

Further Jobs Plans for the Digital and Technologies and Defence sectors are expected to be published later this week. The Defence plan aims to increase the number of people supported through apprenticeship programmes in the defence sector to at least 14,000 annually by 2035.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the plans bring government and industry together to open up more apprenticeships, training, and vocational routes. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden added that these commitments will help create clear pathways into apprenticeships, training, and jobs for young people.

Why this matters: The plans aim to connect more young people, including those not in education, employment, or training, with opportunities to earn, learn, and build careers, while also addressing skills shortages in key industries.

What this means for you: If you are a young person aged under 25, these plans could lead to more apprenticeship, work experience, and training opportunities in professional services, construction, and potentially defence and digital sectors.
