The Green Party is preparing for a byelection in the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras on Thursday, where leader Zack Polanski is a candidate. Polanski aims to succeed Keir Starmer in the high-profile contest.
A few months ago, in the spring, the Green Party experienced a period of growth, with former Labour supporters reportedly switching to them in large numbers and Green candidates winning across the country. At that time, the party was second behind Reform UK in some national polls.
However, the party's national standing has since shifted, with some polls now placing them approximately 20 points behind Labour. At their recent conference in Brighton, a motion was passed stating that "Zionism is racism." Polanski neither supported nor opposed this motion.
In Holborn and St Pancras, Green activists have been distributing party newspapers with the headline "Greens close in!". Polanski's pledge for the byelection is to keep the government "in check."
