Heavy showers and thunderstorms are set to affect large areas of the UK on Thursday, potentially causing flooding and travel disruption. A Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning remains in effect for northern England and north Wales until 10:00 BST on Thursday.
During the day, the downpours are expected to move southwards and eastwards, impacting other parts of Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, and southern England. Drivers are advised that the return to wet weather could lead to slippery conditions and flooded roads.
Within the Met Office yellow warning area, 15-20mm of rain could fall in an hour, with 30-50mm possible over a six-hour period. Flash flooding is a possibility, particularly in areas where the ground remains hard after a prolonged dry spell. Lightning and hail are additional hazards.
Temperatures are also forecast to decrease, with some areas expected to stay below the August average for the next few days. Friday is predicted to be cooler, with temperatures widely remaining below the August norm, and Friday night could see temperatures drop into single digits in many places.
