Hemp Nears WSL Assist Record as London City Extend Winning Run

Lauren Hemp is just three assists shy of the WSL all-time record, while London City secured their fourth consecutive win.

  • Lauren Hemp recorded her 50th and 51st WSL assists, moving within three of Beth Mead's record of 54.
  • London City extended their winning streak to four games with a 2-1 victory over Everton.
  • Aston Villa secured their first win of the season, beating Liverpool 2-1.

Manchester City's Lauren Hemp is closing in on the Women's Super League all-time assist record, having provided two goals in Sunday's 3-2 win against Brighton. The 26-year-old set up Khadija Shaw twice within the opening 16 minutes, bringing her total to 51 assists. She now trails teammate Beth Mead, the current record holder, by just three assists.

Elsewhere in the league, London City continued their impressive start to the season, extending their winning run to four games with a 2-1 victory over Everton. Despite a gritty performance against a tough defence, London City's two first-half goals came on transition, highlighting their deep quality. They have also faced the fewest shots on target in the division, demonstrating growing defensive mettle.

Aston Villa secured their first win of the season, coming from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1. This positive result for interim head coach Brian Sørensen, who took over last month, doubled Villa's points tally after three draws in their opening five games. West Ham also claimed their first away win of the campaign, with Kelly Gago's second league goal securing a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Arsenal drew 1-1 with Birmingham, despite dominating possession and attacking metrics. Tottenham suffered a 6-2 defeat to Chelsea, with head coach Martin Ho noting a lack of maturity in big games as his team conceded three goals in nine minutes and then two in six. Charlton, still without a point after six games, showed bravery in their second-half performance against Manchester United, according to manager Karen Hills.
