Historic Cinerama Dome to Reopen in 2028 After Sony Pictures Deal

The iconic Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, closed since 2020, is set to reopen in 2028 following an agreement announced by Sony Pictures in July.

  • Sony Pictures announced in July that the Cinerama Dome will reopen in 2028.
  • The cinema, built in 1963, closed in 2020 and was designated a historic cultural monument in 1998.
  • Alamo Drafthouse, acquired by Sony Pictures in 2024, will operate the 956-seat venue, offering traditional concessions.

The Cinerama Dome, a distinctive geodesic structure on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, is slated to reopen in 2028. Sony Pictures confirmed the news in July, ending a period of closure that began in 2020.

Built in 1963, the cinema is a historic cultural monument and will be operated by Alamo Drafthouse, a dine-in theatre chain purchased by Sony Pictures in 2024. The venue will maintain its historic feel and name, offering traditional concessions rather than full meals.

The reopening follows a public campaign to save the dome, including a petition and rallies. Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures, stated on 22 July, "We believe in moviegoing down to our soul, and no venue on earth stands more for that than the one-of-a-kind Dome."

This development comes amid a positive year for the movie industry, with the summer box office hitting $4bn for only the second time since 2020. The Cinerama Dome is one of several Los Angeles theatres recently rescued, with others like the Westwood Village and Bruin theatres also set for reopening.

Why this matters: The reopening of the Cinerama Dome is seen as a hopeful sign for the movie industry, which is experiencing its biggest year since before the pandemic, and for the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
