Hurricane Nolo was moving away from the Hawaiian islands on Sunday, 27 September 2026, though the threat of heavy rain, flash flooding, and strong winds remained. The Hawaii county civil defense agency issued a high wind warning, wind advisory, and high surf advisory for parts of the island through Sunday evening. Nolo's maximum sustained winds increased to 115mph (165kph).
Forecasters anticipate Nolo's outer bands could cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides, with some areas of the Big Island potentially receiving up to 20in (50cm) of rain. Heavy rain is also expected on other islands. The storm's centre is projected to stay well south and south-west of the Hawaiian Islands, approaching the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument early this week.
Separately, Hurricane Polo, a dangerous Category 3 hurricane with top sustained winds of 125mph (205kph), is nearing Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Mexico's National Meteorological Service expects Polo to make landfall on Monday. The Mexican government has issued a hurricane warning along the coast from Huatabampito to Guaymas.
The Mexican navy has gathered personnel and humanitarian aid in Guaymas and Mazatlan ports, deploying three vessels to deliver aid to coastal communities that may be isolated by the hurricane. Tropical storm Rachel also formed off Mexico's south-west coast on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of 40mph (65kph).
