Fifa President Gianni Infantino has secured the unconditional support of all 54 African member associations for his re-election campaign in March. The pledge follows promises of further investment in African football.
Infantino made his case directly to national association heads at a strategy conference in Cape Verde. Confederation of African Football (Caf) President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the unanimous decision, stating it was due to the support Infantino has given to African football.
This development comes after Infantino was forced to abandon a plan to sell a financial stake in Fifa tournaments earlier this year. That plan had met with significant opposition, particularly from European and North American federations, leading some to withdraw their endorsement for the presidential contest.
Infantino highlighted that Fifa has invested one billion dollars in Africa over the last 10 years through the Fifa Forward programme, funding 124 different projects. He reaffirmed his commitment to the continent, promising that funding would remain a priority.
