An inquest in Brighton has found that three sisters, Jane Adetoro, Christina Walters, and Rebecca Walters, died by suicide in May 2026. The women, described by their family as “the closest sisters and the best friends,” drowned after entering the sea in Brighton on 12 May.
The inquest heard that the sisters had travelled to Birmingham on 11 May, visiting Brookvale Park lake, the location where their mother, Janice Adetoro, died by drowning 16 years prior. The women were picked up by taxi and driven back to their London flat less than two hours after arriving in Birmingham.
On the evening of 12 May, the sisters took a train to Brighton, arriving at 10:20 pm, and then a car to the beachfront. CCTV footage showed them pacing the seafront for at least four hours before they were last seen at 2:42 am. Emergency services were called shortly before 5:45 am after a cyclist reported seeing a body on the beach. None of the women could swim, and the sea conditions were rough.
DCI Mark Cullimore of Sussex police confirmed there was no evidence of third-party involvement, drugs, alcohol, or violence. Senior coroner Penelope Schofield concluded that all three intended to end their lives, stating, “These three sisters lived very secluded lives, they were incredibly private, we don’t know why they took this course of action or indeed why they chose to do it in Brighton.”
Their father, Joseph Jacobson, told the inquest of his indescribable loss, stating, “To lose all three of my precious daughters, Jane, Christina and Rebecca, is a heartbreak beyond anything I could ever have imagined.”
