British tennis player Jack Draper exited the Canadian Open in the first round, losing to France's Terence Atmane. The 24-year-old, making his first appearance since June, took the match to three sets before recurring discomfort appeared to limit his play, resulting in a 6-3 2-6 6-2 defeat.
Draper received a main-draw wildcard for the Montreal tournament after a persistent arm injury, including bone bruising from a shoulder injury at the US Open in August, caused his world ranking to drop from fourth to as low as 160th. He had previously pulled out of scheduled comebacks at Wimbledon and the Washington Open this summer.
Midway through the third set, after being broken for 4-1, Draper was overcome with emotion during a change of ends and was seen wiping tears from his eyes. Atmane went on to serve out the match and will face Karen Khachanov in the second round.
Draper has a wildcard entry to the Cincinnati Open, which begins next week, but this incident casts doubt on his participation in that tournament and the US Open, which starts on 23 August.
