Jaissle questions yellow card for touchline behaviour

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has questioned why he received a yellow card for his touchline behaviour, feeling other managers were not booked for similar actions.

  • Matthias Jaissle was booked in the 70th minute of Newcastle's 2-2 draw against Bournemouth for straying outside his technical area.
  • Jaissle is the only Premier League manager to have been cautioned in the opening weeks of the season.
  • A new charter introduced in 2023 specifies that occupants must remain within their technical area.

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has voiced his disappointment after receiving a yellow card for his touchline behaviour during last week's 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. The 38-year-old was booked by referee Rob Jones in the 70th minute for repeatedly straying outside his technical area, despite being reminded by the fourth official.

Jaissle, who joined Newcastle from Al-Ahli last month, contested the ruling, questioning the "benefit of that rule" if he was "just supporting and engaging with the team." He expressed his disappointment, particularly when comparing his caution to the unbooked actions of some of his managerial colleagues.

The Newcastle boss is currently the only manager to have been cautioned in the Premier League in the early stages of the season. A new charter on participant behaviour, introduced in 2023 by the Premier League, FA, EFL, and Professional Game Referees, mandates that occupants must remain within their technical area during matches.
