Stefan Kung, a two-time European time trial champion, secured his 24th professional time trial victory on stage 18 of the Vuelta a Espana. Kung completed the 32.1km flat route from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera in 35 minutes and 22.82 seconds.
British rider Callum Thornley, making his Grand Tour debut, achieved his best-ever WorldTour race result by finishing second, three seconds behind Kung. Joao Almeida of UAE Team Emirates-XRG placed third.
Overall leader Enric Mas produced a strong performance in the time trial, limiting his deficit to Primoz Roglic by 33 seconds. Mas now holds a 1 minute and 37 second lead over Roglic, who moved up to second in the general classification. Felix Gall slipped to third, 3 minutes and 1 second behind Mas.
Britain's Oscar Onley extended his lead in the best young rider's classification, finishing 27 seconds quicker than Jakob Omrzel. Frenchman Clement Berthet also moved from ninth to seventh overall.
