World No 1 Jannik Sinner will miss the US Open this year, withdrawing from the tournament due to a right knee injury. The Italian star has not competed since successfully defending his Wimbledon title last month against Alexander Zverev, having also missed the Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati.
Sinner confirmed the "difficult decision" after working with his team and medical staff. He stated that despite efforts, he still needs more time to recover from his right knee issue, having been back on court in Monte Carlo recently.
Expressing his disappointment, Sinner said, "I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart." He added that he was looking forward to returning to play in front of the fans.
This news follows Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner's rival whom he lost to in the New York final a year ago, revealing he will return at Flushing Meadows after a four-month absence due to a wrist injury.
