Jones backs calls for inquest after British players exit US Open early

British tennis player Fran Jones has supported calls for an inquiry into the state of UK tennis after all nine British players in the US Open main draw failed to progress beyond the second round.

  • None of the nine British players in the US Open main draw advanced past the second round.
  • Fran Jones was the last British player remaining, losing in the second round to 14th seed Iva Jovic.
  • Injuries kept established British stars Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu out of the tournament.

British tennis player Fran Jones has called for an inquest into the state of the sport in the UK following a disappointing showing at the US Open. Jones was the final British player in the tournament, but her defeat to 14th seed Iva Jovic on Thursday night meant no British player progressed beyond the second round.

Nine British players reached the main draw, including Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery, who faced a tough first-round draw against 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Cameron Norrie, Jan Choinski, and Henry Wendelken also exited in the first round.

Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart, and Jones herself were all eliminated in the second round. Jones acknowledged the absence of key players Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu due to injury, stating there "definitely" needs to be an inquiry into the situation.

Draper has been sidelined for much of the past year and a half with a recurring bone bruising injury, while Raducanu missed the tournament due to a stress fracture in her leg. Leylah Fernandez, Raducanu's 2021 US Open final opponent, has advised her not to rush her return to avoid further problems.
