Jorja Smith, 29, has released her third album, 'What Are the Odds', this week. The 12-track collection, described as an "old-fashioned ass-shaker," marks a full commitment to dance music for the artist, known for her soulful R&B.
Produced with Richard Isong, also known as P2J, the album is a vibrant collage of Black British dance music, incorporating UK garage, funky house, 2-step, and Afrobeats. It features collaborations with artists such as Wizkid and Devlin.
Smith stated that the album's genesis was different from her previous records, emerging almost accidentally after initial plans for a dance EP. Despite its dancefloor focus, the album maintains Smith's emotional resonance, with tracks addressing themes like addiction, self-reflection, and the end of friendships.
The artist addressed suggestions of a "comeback," noting she has been on tour since 2017 and attributes such comments to her return to social media after breaks.
