Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was investigating suspected corruption by businessman Yorgen Fenech and members of Malta’s government when she was killed, a jury has heard. Fenech is currently on trial for murder, accused of commissioning and paying for her killing in a car bombing in October 2017.
Matthew Caruana Galizia, the journalist’s son, testified on Monday that he had been helping his mother process a leak of thousands of emails from Electrogas, a company partly owned by Fenech, at the time of her death in 2017. He stated that his mother had wanted to gather journalists to examine this data.
Matthew Caruana Galizia also recounted finding information relevant to Malta while working on the Panama Papers leak in 2015, which he shared with his mother. He told the court that material from this leak and his mother's sources indicated that Malta's then energy minister, Konrad Mizzi, and the prime minister's chief of staff, Keith Schembri, had set up offshore companies.
