Julia Donaldson has confirmed that 'Gruffalo Granny', released this week, will be the final book in The Gruffalo series. The new book introduces the Gruffalo's grandmother, with the Gruffalo and his daughter awaiting her visit. The mouse, owl, fox, and snake characters also feature in the story.

Donaldson, who was made a dame in June, was named the UK's bestselling author in 2025 across all genres. Since its publication in 1999, 'The Gruffalo' and its 2004 sequel, 'The Gruffalo's Child', have sold over 18.2 million copies worldwide, contributing to Donaldson selling more than 50 million books in the UK.

The author describes 'Gruffalo Granny' as a celebration of storytelling, with the mouse, Gruffalo's child, and Granny Gruffalo all acting as storytellers. The book also references several of Donaldson's earlier works, including 'Room on the Broom', 'Monkey Puzzle', and 'The Snail and the Whale'.

Donaldson is also working on a project for the National Year of Reading to compile a list of recommended picture books not written by her, with an announcement expected by the end of the year.
