Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, known for films including The Last Emperor and Sexy Beast, has died aged 77. His publicist confirmed that Thomas "passed away peacefully" on Friday, surrounded by his family and loved ones at his country home in Oxfordshire.
Thomas was a celebrated figure in the film industry, having worked with international directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, David Cronenberg, and Matteo Garrone throughout his decades-long career. His other notable films include the 1990 drama The Sheltering Sky and the 2015 dystopian thriller High-Rise.
The British producer gained mainstream success with The Last Emperor, a 1987 biographical drama directed by Bertolucci, which won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Thomas was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 New Year honours. His latest collaboration, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, with Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday.
