Jurors on Thursday heard a 2008 interview in which Duane “Keffe D” Davis told detectives that his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, fired the shots that killed Tupac Shakur in 1996. Davis, who was also in the car with Anderson, is accused of orchestrating the killing of the 25-year-old hip-hop artist in Las Vegas.
Davis stated that the white Cadillac he was in pulled alongside a car containing Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight. He claimed that after passing a gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined it, Anderson took the weapon and began firing.
Prosecutors told jurors they would rely heavily on Davis’s admissions in interviews and a 2019 memoir. Davis has pleaded not guilty, with his lawyer calling the prosecution's narrative “fiction” and stating Davis was “full of crap” when recounting his involvement.
Detectives had initially interviewed Davis about the 1997 killing of the Notorious BIG, telling him at the time that “nothing you say today can be used against you.” Prosecutors contend that Davis’s subsequent public statements about the shooting nullify any confidentiality agreement.
