King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prince William are set to visit Aberfan later this month to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the disaster. The tragedy on 21 October 1966 saw 116 children and 28 adults killed when a colliery spoil tip collapsed, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby houses.
The royal party will join survivors, bereaved parents, and community members to pay tribute to those who died. Their visit will include the Aberfan Memorial Garden, located on the site of the former primary school, and the Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Centre.
During their visit, a short prayer and a moment of silence will be observed in the memorial garden, with King Charles and Prince William laying wreaths, and Queen Camilla placing a posy. They will also meet retired emergency service workers who responded to the collapse and view an exhibition detailing the rescue effort. Prince William is scheduled to unveil an Aberfan Memorial Tree at Ynysowen Community Primary School, which was established to continue the legacy of Pantglas Junior School.
