Kojima Productions has issued a statement responding to speculation surrounding PlayStation's decision to cancel work on the espionage game Physint. The project, an action-espionage game from Hideo Kojima, was initially announced in 2024 and had a planned launch in 2030.
While no official reason was provided for the cancellation, a video from games journalist Jason Schreier suggested that PlayStation withdrew from the project due to lower-than-expected commercial success of Death Stranding 2, and claims that Kojima was exceeding budget and missing deadlines for Physint.
Kojima Productions stated they normally do not comment on unsubstantiated internet speculation. However, they felt compelled to respond as these claims, which they say did not come from any official source, have impacted fans, creative partners, and colleagues. They encouraged the public to view these claims with scepticism.
Hideo Kojima reportedly expressed being "shocked" by PlayStation's decision to withdraw funding for Physint and voiced concerns about the future of Kojima Productions. He also stated that he holds no ill will, acknowledging the current challenges within the game industry. Kojima is reportedly continuing to work on the game's world, system, scenario, visuals, design, and actor modelling, with Xbox now funding the title.
