The highly anticipated legal clash between the Premier League and Manchester City, a team that has dominated the competition in recent years, saw both sides field impressive legal teams. Manchester City's defence was spearheaded by David Pannick KC, a barrister renowned for representing high-profile clients including Queen Elizabeth II and Boris Johnson. Pannick reportedly charges £5,000 an hour.
Paul Harris KC, a leading sport and commercial silk, also played a key role for City, having previously led their successful appeal against UEFA's Champions League ban. Philip Marshall KC, specialising in complex commercial disputes, was another silk on City's team, with the law firm Clifford Chance also involved.
Representing the Premier League was Adam Lewis KC, widely regarded as the country's preeminent sports barrister, who has acted for Chelsea in past cases. Andrew Hunter KC, known for his work on rugby's “bloodgate” and Formula One’s spygate scandals, also featured for the league. Jason Pobjoy KC, who previously represented the Premier League when Everton were docked points, also argued for the league.
