Luigi Mangione, 28, has pleaded guilty to the shooting of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024. Mr Mangione appeared in a federal courtroom in New York on Friday, 14 August 2026.
His lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, informed Judge Margaret Garnett that Mr Mangione was prepared to plead guilty. Mr Mangione then read a statement to the court, admitting: "I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan and he died."
Mr Mangione told the court he had researched online and emailed UnitedHealthcare posing as an investor to learn about an annual conference in December 2024. He also stated he used a 3D printer to make a gun.
Thompson's family members were present in court and issued a statement afterwards, calling the day an important step toward justice. Mr Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced on 18 December, and could face life in prison for each of the two stalking charges. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 24-30 years.
A separate trial for state charges related to the murder is still scheduled to begin in September.
