Manchester City have secured the services of midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a joint-British record £125m deal. The transfer brings an end to the summer's longest-running transfer saga and marks City's second club-record signing this summer, following the £116m arrival of Elliot Anderson.
The acquisition highlights City's determination to secure manager Enzo Maresca's top target. Maresca, who previously managed Chelsea, was reportedly keen to reunite with his former captain, viewing Fernandez as a trusted player familiar with his system.
Fernandez's move makes him the first player in football history to transfer for over £100m twice, having previously joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023. The 25-year-old also joins a unique group of players, including Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand, who have broken the British transfer record twice in their careers during the Premier League era.
Chelsea, who initially sought £135m, accepted City's £125m offer, which was £5m more than their initial valuation. The club has now raised over £425m through player sales this summer.
