Stewart Irwin, from Carlisle, has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison after his 74-year-old mother, Veronica Irwin, died having lain on their bathroom floor for two weeks.
Carlisle Crown Court heard that Mr Irwin called 999 on 28 July 2023, stating his mother's skin had "started to turn blue". Paramedics attending their Rydal Street flat found Mrs Irwin unconscious, semi-naked, and malnourished.
Mr Justice Bright stated that Irwin "made a conscious decision" to leave his mother without help and "must have realised that she was approaching death". Mrs Irwin, who was 4ft 10in tall and weighed just over seven stones, died later that evening in hospital from hypothermia and neglected pressure ulcers covering over a third of her body surface.
During the period his mother was on the floor, Irwin reportedly withdrew money from her bank account and made nine visits to a nearby shop to buy cider. He denied gross negligence manslaughter but was unanimously convicted by a jury.
