Manchester United are reportedly close to securing Mexico international Rebeca Bernal from Washington Spirit. The 29-year-old, who can play in central defence or midfield, is poised to become the first Mexican player in the Women's Super League.

Bernal joined the Spirit in February 2025 from CF Monterrey and has since made 41 appearances for the club, winning the NWSL Challenge Cup in 2025. She was absent from Spirit's recent NWSL game against Bay FC due to an "excused absence."

The Mexico international has also earned 65 caps for her country, scoring seven goals. This includes the winning goal in the 2023 Pan American Games women's football final, where Mexico defeated Chile to claim their first title. United, under new manager Eva Olid, are set to begin their WSL season against London City Lionesses on Friday.

Why this matters: This potential transfer would mark a historic moment for the Women's Super League by introducing its first Mexican player, potentially broadening the league's international appeal.
