Manchester City has reportedly been found guilty of the majority of charges related to breaching Premier League financial rules, with an official verdict expected shortly. The champions were referred to an independent commission in February 2023, following a four-year investigation into alleged breaches spanning nine seasons from 2009 to 2018.
While no sanctions have been decided and the official verdict is yet to be announced, The Athletic has reported that the club will be found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges. If found guilty, potential punishments could range from fines and points deductions to possible expulsion from the Premier League. The club would also have the opportunity to appeal any verdict.
Retrospective punishment is also a possibility, which could see City stripped of honours won during the period of the financial breaches. This could impact their Premier League titles from 2011/12, 2013/14, and 2017/18, potentially benefiting Manchester United (twice) and Liverpool. Additionally, four domestic cup trophies won during the same period could be removed, which would retrospectively award the FA Cup to Stoke City (2010/11) and the Carabao Cup to Sunderland (2013/14), Liverpool (2015/16), and Arsenal (2017/18).
