Mark Rylance is currently starring in 'Tartuffe (Remixed)' at the Marylebone Theatre in London. This modern update of Molière’s 1664 comedy, which originally depicted a trickster faking piety to defraud a devout family, is written and directed by Darren Raymond.
The adaptation transplants the drama to a hotel setting, ahead of a wedding that unites Jamaican and Nigerian families. Rylance's character, now named Pastor Blake, is portrayed as a figure who professes public hypocrisy, backing charities for homeless people while investing in property companies.
The production maintains rhyming couplets, a stylistic element from Molière's original play. Performances by Usifu Jalloh as Oga and Nakeba Buchanan as Elmire are noted, alongside Sara Mokonen and Ivandro Da Cruz Leite as the bride and groom.
