  • Francesca McCaigue, known as Fran, died on 6 July at the age of 22.
  • The artwork was created by Fran for Derian House Children's Hospice's charity ball.
  • The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Councillor Mahfooz Hussain, made the winning bid of £2,000 for the artwork.

An artwork begun by Francesca McCaigue, who died at 22, was purchased for £2,000 and subsequently returned to her family. Fran, who had complex congenital heart disease, had received support from Derian House Children's Hospice in Chorley, Lancashire, since she was eight years old.

Fran died in hospital on 6 July, before she could complete the artwork intended for the hospice's charity ball. At the ball, the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Councillor Mahfooz Hussain, made the winning bid of £2,000 after hearing Fran's story, then gave the artwork back to her family.

Fran's mother, Nicola, from Colne, stated that she and Fran's sister, Chlöe, cried when the Mayor announced his decision to return the artwork. Nicola added that Chlöe had contributed to the artwork after Fran's death. The artwork was later auctioned at Derian House's second charity ball, which raised £43,226 for the hospice.
