Kingston Ancient Market fire not suspicious, say police

A fire that destroyed stalls and damaged shops at Kingston's Ancient Market has been deemed non-suspicious by the Metropolitan Police. A clean-up operation is now underway.

The Metropolitan Police has stated that a fire which started in the early hours of Tuesday at Kingston's Ancient Market was not suspicious. The incident led to the destruction of several market stalls and caused damage to a number of nearby shops.

A clean-up operation is currently in progress following the fire. The London Fire Brigade's investigation findings have not yet been released.

Kingston Council leader Andreas Kirsch said he was "shocked and saddened" by the fire, noting that the Ancient Market is at the heart of the community. He added that the council is working with partners to support those affected and to prioritise the market's recovery.

The Market Place remains cordoned off by police, meaning businesses within the closed area are unable to trade until further notice, according to the council.
