Oli McBurnie delivered an integral performance for Hull City in their shock 2-0 Premier League victory against Manchester United on Saturday. The 30-year-old striker's efforts have prompted renewed discussion about his potential inclusion in Sebastien Pocognoli's first Scotland squad for next month's Nations League fixtures.
McBurnie, who last played for Scotland in March 2021, was central to Hull's win, with his back-post attempt leading to Semi Ajayi's rebound goal. He also had a goal-bound header saved and showcased strong defensive work, winning back possession and completing 11 duels.
Despite his club form, which included 19 goals last season to secure Hull's Premier League return, McBurnie has yet to score in 17 appearances for Scotland. His past commitment has been questioned by sections of the Tartan Army, though he expressed in December last year that returning to the Scotland set-up was his "ultimate goal."
Pocognoli, known for wanting his teams to play intense football, may find McBurnie's defensive numbers and experience as a lone striker appealing. The former head coach, Steve Clarke, resigned after Scotland's group stage exit from the World Cup, where they scored only one goal in three matches.
