Jessica Pegula has secured her place in the Cincinnati Open final after a nearly three-hour battle against six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. The third seed emerged victorious with a 7-5 4-6 6-4 scoreline in a match marked by 13 breaks of serve.
Pegula will now face fellow American Coco Gauff, who earlier defeated unseeded Czech Sara Bejlek 6-4 6-1. This highly anticipated match will be the first all-American women's final in Cincinnati in 56 years, with Rosie Casals having beaten Nancy Richey in the 1970 final.
Reflecting on her challenging semi-final, Pegula noted, "I felt like we were playing well at times and then not playing well at times, so it was really tough to get a gauge on the match." She added, "It is a little emotionally draining."
In the men's draw, Frances Tiafoe defeated Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-3, setting up a final against France's Arthur Fils. This will be a historic occasion, marking the first time two black players have met in an ATP Masters 1000 final. Tiafoe, who was a finalist in the 2024 Cincinnati Open, expressed his excitement, stating, "It's always nice to be a part of history. Hopefully we can have more big finals like this having people of colour, and I'm super pumped about it."
