Pegula and Gauff to contest historic all-American Cincinnati final

Jessica Pegula's victory over Iga Swiatek sets up an all-American women's final at the Cincinnati Open, the first in 56 years. The men's final will also make history, featuring two black players for the first time in an ATP Masters 1000 event.

  • Jessica Pegula defeated Iga Swiatek in a nearly three-hour match to reach the Cincinnati Open final.
  • Pegula will face Coco Gauff in the first all-American women's final at Cincinnati in 56 years.
  • Frances Tiafoe and Arthur Fils will contest the first ATP Masters 1000 final between two black players.

Jessica Pegula has secured her place in the Cincinnati Open final after a nearly three-hour battle against six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. The third seed emerged victorious with a 7-5 4-6 6-4 scoreline in a match marked by 13 breaks of serve.

Pegula will now face fellow American Coco Gauff, who earlier defeated unseeded Czech Sara Bejlek 6-4 6-1. This highly anticipated match will be the first all-American women's final in Cincinnati in 56 years, with Rosie Casals having beaten Nancy Richey in the 1970 final.

Reflecting on her challenging semi-final, Pegula noted, "I felt like we were playing well at times and then not playing well at times, so it was really tough to get a gauge on the match." She added, "It is a little emotionally draining."

In the men's draw, Frances Tiafoe defeated Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-3, setting up a final against France's Arthur Fils. This will be a historic occasion, marking the first time two black players have met in an ATP Masters 1000 final. Tiafoe, who was a finalist in the 2024 Cincinnati Open, expressed his excitement, stating, "It's always nice to be a part of history. Hopefully we can have more big finals like this having people of colour, and I'm super pumped about it."

Why this matters: The Cincinnati Open is set to host two historic finals: the first all-American women's final in 56 years and the first ATP Masters 1000 final featuring two black players.
