Martin McDonagh's new film, 'Wild Horse Nine', brings his signature style of two male protagonists to a US setting with American characters. The movie features Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich as Chris and Lee, two seasoned CIA operatives stationed in Santiago, Chile, in 1973.
The plot sees Chris, who is seriously ill and has a morphine habit, head to Easter Island on a semi-sanctioned holiday. Lee is tasked with accompanying him as his minder and pal. Their boss, MJ, played by Steve Buscemi, is reportedly furious as Chris has begun indiscreetly discussing his past operations.
The film has been described as having an acrid pairing between Rockwell and Malkovich, with Malkovich delivering long speeches. While there are some laughs and lively moments, the review notes persistent violent flourishes coexisting with sentimentality, suggesting it is not a classic McDonagh film.
