The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by the Metropolitan Police. This referral is to determine if there is sufficient evidence for a potential breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The department was notified in 2023 that it was under investigation by the Metropolitan Police and has cooperated fully. The MHCLG Secretary of State stated that the government failed in its duty to keep Grenfell Tower residents safe and apologised on behalf of the British state.
The Secretary of State acknowledged the significance of this development and affirmed the government's continued cooperation with the independent criminal justice process. The CPS will now lead on the next steps in reviewing the evidence.
