Michael Hussey, the former Australia batter, has rejected the chance to become England’s Test batting coach. Instead, he has opted for a part-time deal with Cricket Australia.
Hussey held discussions last month with England Test head coach Stephen Fleming about joining his backroom staff. However, he is understood to have chosen to remain in Australia, which is seen as a boost for Pat Cummins’ side ahead of next year's Ashes series.
The 51-year-old is believed to have accepted a consultancy role with Cricket Australia, which offers him the flexibility to continue with existing commitments. These include coaching in The Hundred and other franchise tournaments, as well as commentary and punditry work for Fox Sports in Australia.
Fleming, who worked closely with Hussey for 18 years at Chennai Super Kings, was unable to persuade him to join England. Fleming will now continue his search for a batting coach, though the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) may consider retaining Marcus Trescothick, who has reportedly impressed in a caretaker role during the current Test series against Pakistan.
