Former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey, known as 'Mr Cricket', could be joining England's new Test coaching setup. Reports from Australian broadcaster SEN indicate that incoming Test coach Stephen Fleming has made an 'informal' approach to Hussey.
The pair share a significant professional history, having been teammates at Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League before Hussey transitioned to Fleming's backroom staff as a batting specialist. Hussey, 51, is currently coaching the Welsh Fire men's team in The Hundred, where Joe Root, returning as Test captain under Fleming, is a marquee player.
Marcus Trescothick currently holds the batting specialist role for England and will lead the upcoming series against Pakistan on an interim basis before Fleming's arrival. It remains unclear if both coaches would be part of the red-ball regime, though Trescothick might potentially move to Brendon McCullum's limited-overs setup as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) considers a split coaching model.
Hussey has previously worked with England, serving as a consultant coach during their successful T20 World Cup campaign in 2022, where he was hired to provide local expertise. England managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, recently stated his hope to offer coaching opportunities to homegrown talent, while also committing to attracting the best available candidates.
