Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has reaffirmed the UK's backing for Ukraine during his first visit to the country, announcing a £54 million package of winter resilience funding. The funding aims to bolster Ukraine's preparedness for its fifth winter under Russian bombardment.
During his visit, Mr Miliband joined President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the site of a recent strike in Pryluky, Chernihiv Region, which claimed the lives of at least 22 people. He also announced fresh sanctions against Russia, targeting approximately 40 entities in the financial, oil, and technology sectors to disrupt supply chains and financing.
The £54 million package includes £20 million for Ukraine's energy security, supporting emergency repairs to the energy grid, investment in back-up generators, solar power, and new technologies. An additional £34 million is allocated to protect and maintain heating and water for Ukrainian families and provide direct cash support.
Mr Miliband also announced £6.3 million in UK support for Ukraine's efforts to pursue justice and accountability for war crimes. He met with President Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, stating, "My message to Putin is clear – You cannot wait us out."
