MLS Commissioner Hopes Harry Kane Joins League After Messi and Beckham

MLS commissioner Don Garber has expressed his desire for England captain Harry Kane to join the league, following in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Sir David Beckham.

  • MLS commissioner Don Garber is eager for Harry Kane to join the league.
  • Kane, 33, recently equalled the England cap record with his 125th appearance.
  • Kane has previously outlined plans for a potential move to MLS and an ambition to play as an NFL kicker.

MLS commissioner Don Garber is keen for England captain Harry Kane to join Lionel Messi in the United States, stating that the forward's interest helps fulfil a long-held ambition championed by Sir David Beckham.

Kane, 33, is currently shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or, having scored 73 goals for club and country in a campaign that included a Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich and a World Cup bronze medal. He recently celebrated a record-equalling 125th England cap by increasing his international goal tally to 91 during Tuesday’s 3-0 Nations League victory over Czechia.

This performance concluded a four-match period where Kane scored six goals. During this time, the striker outlined plans for a potential move to MLS, alongside his ambition to play as an NFL kicker. Commissioner Garber stated, “I’d love for him to do that,” adding that it would be “the fulfilment of the dream that we had to build a proper soccer league that would drive a soccer nation.”

Garber, who will become chairman at the turn of the year, welcomed Kane’s keenness to move to MLS. He also acknowledged the significant impact of David Beckham, whose move to LA Galaxy acted as a catalyst for the league's growth, which further accelerated when Beckham helped form Inter Miami and sign Lionel Messi in 2023.
