Jane Coates, from Warrington, Cheshire, has travelled to Collin County, Texas, to call on the district attorney to reopen the investigation into the death of her daughter, Lucy Harrison. Ms Harrison, 23, was shot in the chest on 10 January 2025 in Prosper, near Dallas, at her father's home.
Police in Prosper investigated Ms Harrison's death as possible manslaughter. However, a grand jury in Collin County declined to indict her father, Kris Harrison, after he stated the handgun discharged accidentally while he was showing it to his daughter. Texas police have stated they will not reopen the investigation.
In February, an English coroner concluded Ms Harrison had been unlawfully killed, determining her father's actions constituted gross negligence manslaughter under UK law. Ms Coates said she was told the district attorney would not speak to her but remains determined to continue her fight.
Ms Coates is being supported by lawyer Radd Seiger, who said the district attorney is up for re-election in weeks and they are appealing to local residents to "put pressure on" him. Ms Coates has also called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to publicly back her bid to reopen the investigation.
