Donald Trump has agreed to stop fighting in court the disbursement of E Jean Carroll’s $5m verdict from her 2023 sexual abuse and defamation civil trial. This procedural development means Mr Trump will no longer oppose the monetary outcome, although the funds have already been distributed to Ms Carroll.
The decision was revealed on Tuesday by the United States court of appeals for the second circuit. The court stated that the parties stipulated to dismiss the appeal with prejudice and Mr Trump withdrew his motion for a stay pending appeal.
The funds, which amounted to $5.8m due to accrued interest, were released on 9 July, according to court records dated 14 July. This followed a Manhattan federal court judge's order on 8 July for the disbursement, after the US supreme court's 29 June decision not to review Mr Trump’s appeal.
A spokesperson for Mr Trump’s legal team stated, “The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes.” The statement added that Mr Trump “will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he continues to focus on his mission to Make America Great Again.”
