Mother urges Foreign Secretary to reopen investigation into daughter's death

The mother of Lucy Harrison, who was fatally shot in Texas in 2025, has urged UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband to press US authorities to reopen the investigation into her daughter's death.

  • Lucy Harrison, 23, was fatally shot in Texas on 10 January 2025.
  • A Cheshire senior coroner ruled earlier this year that Lucy Harrison was unlawfully killed.
  • Her father, Kris Harrison, has not been arrested, and a Texas grand jury decided not to prosecute him last year.

Jane Coates, the mother of Lucy Harrison, has written to UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, urging him to intervene with US authorities regarding the investigation into her daughter's death. Lucy Harrison, from Warrington, Cheshire, was fatally shot in Texas on 10 January 2025, the day before she was due to return to the UK.

Earlier this year, the senior coroner for Cheshire ruled that Lucy was unlawfully killed and that her father's actions amounted to gross negligence manslaughter. Her father, Kris Harrison, admitted holding the pistol at the time but has not been arrested. A Texas grand jury decided not to prosecute him last year.

Ms Coates stated in her letter that while the British government cannot interfere with the American justice system, the Foreign Office can use diplomatic channels to highlight the coroner's findings and ask US authorities to review the case. Several UK politicians, including former justice secretary Robert Buckland, are also calling for Miliband to intervene.

The Foreign Office has been approached for comment.

Why this matters: The case highlights concerns regarding the investigation into the death of a British citizen abroad and the potential for diplomatic intervention.
