Flights across Europe continue to be disrupted as Sicily’s Mount Etna remains active. Catania Airport, Italy’s fifth busiest, has suspended arrivals and departures until 6:00 PM on 12 August due to the volcano's eruptive activity and wind conditions.
Many flights departing Catania, including services to Amsterdam, Paris, and New York JFK, have been cancelled. While 10 per cent of flights are reportedly operating, passengers are advised to check their flight status with their airline before travelling.
Mount Etna's ash cloud has also caused disruptions further afield. Malta International Airport confirmed flight disruptions on 11 August, with some cancellations and delays for flights to Edinburgh and Paris. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports "continuing effusive activity" from Etna, and its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) remains at red, indicating ongoing hazards for aircraft.
