The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has donated over 1,500 surplus mobile phones, iPads, laptops, and monitors to schools and charities across North West England since 2021. This initiative aims to address digital exclusion in the region.
The refurbished devices have been distributed to approximately 50 organisations in areas such as Cumbria, Lancaster, Warrington, and Manchester. These include Northwest Blood Bikes and Royal Air Force Air Cadets.
In the last two and a half years, around 200 mobile phones were provided to a large residential care provider supporting children and young people with special educational needs. These phones have helped them stay connected with family and professionals, and engage with educational resources.
Recently, over 130 old iPhones were also donated to Women’s Community Matters in Barrow, South Cumbria. These devices are used by staff to contact clients and have been given directly to clients affected by domestic abuse, mental health issues, or those in the criminal justice system.
