Network Rail has announced a recruitment drive for 26 new apprentices in Scotland, aiming to bolster its engineering workforce. The programme is designed to train the next generation of skilled technicians who will be responsible for maintaining and improving the country's vital rail infrastructure.
The three-year apprenticeship offers a comprehensive learning experience, with a starting salary of £22,661, which increases to £26,750 in the second year. Successful applicants will gain expertise across various engineering disciplines crucial to the railway network, including electrification, signalling, telecoms, and track maintenance. This initiative highlights Network Rail's commitment to investing in future talent and ensuring the long-term reliability and safety of rail services.
Apprentices will begin their journey with an initial year based at Network Rail's state-of-the-art training centre in Westwood, West Midlands. During this period, they will acquire fundamental engineering knowledge and practical skills. Following this intensive introductory phase, they will return to Scotland for the subsequent two years, undertaking placements at local depots across the country. This regional deployment allows apprentices to apply their learning in real-world scenarios and contribute directly to their local rail network.
The scheme is open to individuals aged 16 and over, with no upper age limit, demonstrating an inclusive approach to recruitment. The diverse nature of the roles available means that candidates from various backgrounds and with different levels of prior experience are encouraged to apply. Network Rail emphasises that it is looking for individuals with a keen interest in engineering and a desire to contribute to a critical national service.
This apprenticeship programme is a significant pathway for young people and career changers alike to enter a dynamic industry. It offers not only a competitive salary and structured training but also the opportunity to develop a rewarding career with long-term prospects in an essential sector of the UK economy. Applications for the programme are currently open and will close on 17th March 2024.
